In January 2005, Benny and I spent about 3 weeks in a charming little resort motel called The Mariner at Myrtle Beach. Our daughter Bonnie and her boyfriend Herman had discovered it when they needed a place to stay with their two dogs. The Mariner was built sometime in the 60's, I believe - and someone had put a lot of thought into the layout and design of this place - rooms and suites, dog walks, gardens, wading and swimming pools, tennis courts, all authentically furnished and just one short block from the ocean, which you could see between the high rise hotels on the other side of Ocean Boulevard. People from as far as Canada wintered in the Mariner - some had been coming here with their pets since the 1970's. They spoke of floating in the heated pool, a glass of wine in hand, watching the snowflakes float down. We woke up to breakfast in the alcove, the traditional Wednesday evening cookout, and lots of friendly neighbors.

September of 2007 when Benny and I returned to visit our daughter, the
motel had changed hands. With highrises all around it, we heard that
it would probably not be maintained and that eventually it would be
raized to make room for another highrise luxury condominium. It was
with that thought in mind that I proceeded to take pictures of all the
charm of the place - so that future generations would know they have
options and choices for how to live. |
