Gallery 10 - My (New) Indiana Home in the Good Ol' Summertime

Just a half mile down the road and a hundred years into the past - We spent the first summer 2005 painting and remodeling and putting up some finishing touches such as new curtains here and there. The previous owner was THE curtain guru, so I saved as much as I could of her curtains, but where they were coming apart I had to replace them.. As we do more work on the inside and out, our new Indiana home continues to be a work in progress

Summer number 3 ... first drought in ages ... and I planted and watered like a maniac ... saw a hummingbird startle a butterfly off the hummingbird feeder, saw a baby hummingbird on the hummingbird feeder, and deer tracks in the garden, and a heron in the pond, Benny moved the yellow shed and old 1920's windmill and removed the cement shortly after these pix were taken.

Ever since my friend and master gardener Marilyn told me about Annabelle Hydrangeas, I've been looking for them. I thought I found some last summer online, but the drought dried up that opportunity. However, this year they finally turned up! Marilyn found them at Rural King and called me - I bought these three, and recently another at the Farmer's Market!

The perfect July 4 weekend, a bit cool and mostly sunny at least during the critical times - went with neighbors to a neighborhood wide July 3rd picnic / cookout at our neighbor's old Civil War era home. They passed out blankets and had a camp fire for the fireworks display over the pond which was fabulous! Benny had a small July 4 barbeque for family, friends, and neighbors - didn't give me much warning - thank goodness for my daughter Bonnie! She and Benny cooked - I cleaned. I'm actually getting into cooking again! The 4th was long and relaxing - we strolled the yard and looked at the gardens and sat out and watched the fireflies and the fireworks shooting up all around the horizon.Neighbors stopped by on Saturday. We went out to eat catfish at Mulberry with them in the evening and then over to their house for a visit. Garden's doing great. Got rain and didn't have to water. Went to the monthly fair ground flea market Sunday morning and out for a long bike ride Sunday evening with my husband, mom, and aunt - then we ate outside on Bonnie's picnic table. Woke up this morning to a Monday morning thunderstorm - pouring! The ditch lilies I planted from ebay and from the ditch last spring and from my friend's house this spring were in bloom - so I had my "Nature's Fireworks" for the 4th. And of course the fireflies were gorgeous.

Fledgling Robin

Fledgling Robin

Geez, I'm going to have to split this wall up into years before too much longer. I've had lots of close encounters this summer. Besides this fledgling robin, I saw a baby preying mantis on clematis. He was only about an inch long. Saw a baby toad by my Annabelle Hydrangea behind the summer kitchen - he was about the size of my fingernail - and I saw a huge polyphemus moth - he was about the size of my hand! And then there was that pair of big snapping turtles across the road in the spring!

Not to mention all the various birds - including baby nuthatches.

The first full summer we were here, I rescued a baby squirrel who had evidently fallen out of his nest and took him to the wildlife rehab center.
